Ronald Cicurel
Ronald Cicurel is a philosopher, mathematician, and author. His work is at the intersection of neuroscience, physics, and the philosophy of mind. Born in Egypt and educated across Europe, he initially pursued a scientific career before turning to the question that would become central to his work: How does the brain construct the reality in which we live?
From 2004 to 2011, he was involved in one of the first large-scale brain simulation projects at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Unconvinced by the hype surrounding artificial brain simulation, he left the project. Since then, he has been one of the leading critical voices regarding the limitations of computational models of the mind. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Relativistic Brain" (with Miguel Nicolelis, 2015), "Reality Is a Human Construct" (2021), and "The Limits of the Digital Miracle" (2024). Often described as a critic of artificial intelligence, he prefers the term "critic of unreflective hype": the noise, false promises, and borderline artifacts that pass for understanding.
